Parquet Flooring

Short Description

In the flooring industry, parquet is a type of floor made from wooden blocks or strips. A parquet can sometimes feature inlays of other wood types or materials.

Product Description

Small wood slats are arranged in distinct, repeating patterns to make parquet flooring. Parquet floors traditionally were installed one piece at a time, but most modern parquet is tile-based, with wood slats bonded together.

In the flooring industry, parquet is a type of floor made from wooden blocks or strips. A parquet can sometimes feature inlays of other wood types or materials.

Oak is the most common wood flooring material. Parquets are no exception to this. It is possible to find parquetry made from exotic species such as mahogany, but these are rare due to the cost.

A parquet floor requires a leveled subfloor, and the sanding involved in the process should be handled by professionals. When stripping wood, the most important thing is to follow the grain, and this can be difficult on surfaces made of wooden blocks facing multiple directions.

Herringbone is the most popular type of parquet pattern. Several variations of this simple pattern are available, including single, double, or diagonal (square) herringbone. There are also completely different styles, such as brick, basket weave, hexagon or chevron.

3 Structural Parquet Groups

Parquet can be divided into three major groups based on its structure:
Solid: constructed from solid wood blocks of parquet flooring.
Engineered: consists of multiple layers of hardwood.
A parquet overlay: is made up of much thinner wood pieces and is generally installed on top of an existing floor.

Three grades of Parquet Flooring – prime, select, and rustic.

  • The prime wood is the best quality; it does not have knots or sapwood.
  • In selected, there are few knots and a small amount of sapwood.
  • The rustic grade offers the most natural look with many different types of knots.
